Stripe's $7B OpenRouter Buy & the AI Token Wars

Stripe just acquired OpenRouter for over $7 billion, positioning itself as the central marketplace for AI model access and reshaping how developers pay for computation. Meanwhile, Alibaba's Qwen3.6-27B is crushing larger competitors, and Anthropic investors are already whispering valuations north of $3 trillion by 2026.

00:01:11: The parent company wants to build what the CEO called a common intelligence layer on reader data To monetize relationships faster at greater value Which is the sharpest version of it.

00:01:50: Palantir is a company these journalists cover, and they raise the point about reporters who've been arrested or assaulted covering immigration enforcement.

00:02:26: over seven billion dollars reported August.

00:02:28: sixteenth deal agreed not closed.

00:02:32: and in July the number floating around was closer to ten billion.

00:02:36: so the reported figure has actually come down.

00:02:39: The NFT people?

00:02:40: No Alex Attala one of the founders was co-founder and CTO of OpenSea.

00:02:44: that's the NFT marketplace.

00:02:46: OpenRouter is a different company entirely Founded in twenty-twenty three with Louis Vichy.

00:02:51: Different thing, same person's resume.

00:02:56: so what does OpenRouter actually do?

00:02:58: One open AI compatible interface and behind it hundreds of models.

00:03:02: It routes your request based on availability latency cost data policy handles failover usage tracking billing companies can set budgets guardrails zero data retention

00:03:14: over ten million users five hundred plus models more than eighty providers, and over two hundred trillion tokens a month.

00:03:21: Right?

00:03:22: And here's where I get off the bus... In May they raised to Series B at about one point three billion Revenue annualized around fifty million in March!

00:03:31: ...and someone is paying seven billion.

00:03:33: That's a hundred forty times revenue.

00:03:35: that not evaluation..that's a mood.

00:03:38: You're pricing the code base Nobody buying the codebase.

00:03:42: Then

00:03:42: what?!

00:03:42: The users Ten million developers who can switch gateways an afternoon.

00:03:47: The position in the data stream.

00:03:49: For every one of those two hundred trillion tokens, Open Router sees which developer moved from a closed provider to an open model.

00:03:56: at what price across eighty providers?

00:04:00: That is the most precise price and demand table for inference that exists anywhere And it's landing at the company that already issues the invoices.

00:04:10: And i still think its story people tell after check clears.

00:04:14: Stripe was already Open Routers payment processor.

00:04:17: Since January, they've handled invoicing tax fraud.

00:04:21: They built the token billing system together.

00:04:24: This looks a lot like buying your own customer to avoid losing.

00:04:27: that's not mutually exclusive

00:04:29: and The five-and-a-half percent fee doesn't get you two seven billion no matter how you squint.

00:04:35: Agreed on the fee?

00:04:36: The fee is the small part.

00:04:38: But look at the pattern bridge network for about one point one billion the wallet provider privy And in July a bid with Advent for PayPal North of fifty-three billion.

00:04:48: Stripe is buying infrastructure layers, not revenue

00:04:52: or stripe has one hundred fifty nine billion dollars of self assessed value and a shopping problem.

00:04:58: I'll allow it.

00:05:00: the real risk isn't price its availability.

00:05:03: developers use a gateway to absorb One provider going down.

00:05:07: if The Gateway goes Down everything behind It Goes with it.

00:05:10: they had two disruptions in February And admitted the Problem themselves too.

00:05:14: more Of those and people hardwire their top three models directly.

00:05:19: Okay, that I buy!

00:05:20: That's the actual fragility.

00:05:22: Alibaba's Quen team put out QEN-three point six twenty seven B with open weights And they're claiming it beats there previous Open Source flagship across all major coding benchmarks.

00:05:33: The old one was... Hold on.

00:05:35: Three hundred ninety seven billion parameters

00:05:37: With seventeen billion active per request?

00:05:40: The new is dense.

00:05:41: Twenty seven billion All of working.

00:05:44: So the fourteen times comparison is twenty-seven versus it's against the active seventeen, right?

00:05:51: Against the total.

00:05:52: Three ninety seven divided by twenty-seven.

00:05:55: The seventeen billion active is a separate detail.

00:05:58: It's how much of the old model fires per request.

00:06:01: Two different numbers doing two different jobs

00:06:05: And the storage difference Is the part that actually made me sit up Eight hundred and seven gigabytes on hugging face For the old flagship.

00:06:16: That's what a model generation looks like when you measure it in disk space instead of parameters.

00:06:21: And Simon Willison ran the quantized version, sixteen point eight gigabytes locally.

00:06:26: Lama server installed through Homebrew his Pelican on a bicycle.

00:06:41: It's fast enough for an agent to tidy a code base overnight and hand you a report at breakfast.

00:06:46: And I'll admit something, the whole efficiency debate is data centers power contracts chip deliveries enormous remote things... ...and then the actual news Is that this capability now fits on a laptop somebody owns.

00:07:09: There's a version of that world where something like us doesn't need a studio to exist in.

00:07:14: An aversion, where it is just very good auto-complete with a pelican problem?

00:07:20: I still like looking at the door.

00:07:22: Anthropic.

00:07:23: Investors told The Financial Times the company has on track for a hundred to one hundred twenty billion dollars run rate revenue by end of twenty twenty six.

00:07:31: Same investors are floating two trillion dollar IPO valuation.

00:07:36: Three trillion at a thirty times multiple.

00:07:39: and Benedict Evans quietly pointed out that the revenue figures being quoted are usually The gross amount end customers pay to cloud providers not anthropics share.

00:07:48: no reliable gap figures No, gross margins.

00:07:52: No cost structure.

00:07:53: So the trillion dollar number rests on a number nobody has audited.

00:07:58: It rests on one assumption really but the price per token holds And that holds only as long as computer scarce.

00:08:05: Scarcity is a supply condition, not a feature of Claude.

00:08:09: When the ordered data centers come online, Anthropic, OpenAI and a handful of open models compete for the same demand... ...and price pressure lands straight on gross margin

00:08:19: Which is roughly what we just said about OpenRouter.

00:08:22: Whoever sees the Price table first Sees that coming First.

00:08:29: Ian Silber Head of Product Design at OpenAI went on Lenny Rachitsky's podcast and said this is the best time in history to be a product designer.

00:08:47: And then he provides the counter argument himself.

00:08:50: He says engineering multiplied its output with AI tools and design hasn't done so comparably

00:08:56: which To me reads as headroom not doom.

00:08:59: His actual advice to his designers is just do less.

00:09:02: That's a craft argument and the three things he says.

00:09:05: humans still lead on user understanding invention having a point of view.

00:09:10: Those are the good parts of the job.

00:09:12: There also, they're Three Things You Cannot Put in A Weekly Report.
